Crime Novel Ideas Anyone?

Posted by Wendy Ewurum  |  at  5:53 PM

I was listening to a radio interview with Mike Nicol and Micheal Robotham in July back home in South Africa and I heard them mention how they sometimes get ideas for their novels from current affairs. Today something has been reported in my home country that made me think, "this is what they were talking about".
I've added a little background information for you and then went on to the current article and would love for you to tell me, can you smell a crime novel in here or what? Bearing in mind that this entire saga already feels like a work of fiction to me.

Until last year we, in South Africa, had a King of Teaze Sleaze (depending on who's doing the talking) and that was Lolly Jackson shown below. Lolly was a very well known figure in Johannesburg's limelight, what with an overly successful line of strip-clubs called Teazers and penchant for fast cars (amongst his $12 mil worth collection is an Aston Martin, Lambourgini, Ferrari), you name it if it is fast its there and we all know about it.

This was Lolly's untimely end as reported by iol news on May 4th 2010

Teazers boss Lolly Jackson was shot dead last night when a gunman pumped a barrage of bullets into him in a house in Edleen, Edenvale.
No sooner was Jackson, 53, dead than the killer phoned the police and told them what he had done. Then he fled in the King of Sleaze's Jeep Cherokee.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Eugene Opperman confirmed that Jackson was killed between 7pm and 8pm.
He said the killer had phoned the cops at about 8pm to give them the address where they could find Jackson's body. You can follow the rest of the story HERE.
PS! And the man who allegedly pumped these bullets is a Cypriot national going by the name George Smith (one of many alias') with a lengthy criminal record. As far as I'm aware Mr Smith has since fled South Africa.

Now to Today's News: Executed - mafia style 29 /09/ 2011

MARK Philip Andrews had planned to hand himself over to the police this week in connection with the disappearance and murder of former Teazers lawyer Ian Jordaan.
But on Tuesday, after speaking to a lawyer, the burly 36-year-old was kidnapped.
And fewer than 24 hours later, his body was found at the side of the R59, between the Kliprivier off-ramp and Vereeniging. He had been shot in the back of the head, execution-style.
His hands were bound against the front of his body with cable ties. None of his personal belongings – including his cellphone – were stolen.
Two patrolling police officers found his body alongside the deserted road at about 3am yesterday. Now detectives are piecing together the puzzle of the last 12 hours of Andrews’s life.

Andrews’s murder comes eight days after the charred remains of a man believed to be Jordaan were found in a burnt, overturned car on Broederstroom Road in Hekpoort, west of Joburg.
Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said the only visible body part left in the car was a bare skull. Media reports have speculated that there were no teeth, making positive identification through dental records impossible.
Before he was murdered, Jordaan was forced to transfer R1.8 million from his account into an offshore account belonging to Andrews. The money was Teazers boss Lolly Jackson’s and held in trust as surety for a court case he had against Andrews. The money was deposited into Jordaan’s trust account some time before Jackson was murdered. ....and you can follow this story HERE.

Now I ask you, does this not have the words crime novel written all over it?

About the Author

Most know me as the author to Fabulosity Reads and in actual fact, that is the previous name of this blog. I have since then moved my books to a Wordpress self-hosted blog so that I can have a place to show a different side of me which I am equally passionate about and that is marketing and personal development. I hope you will love being here, watching me grow as I share and learn. My highest hope is that we will grown and learn together in all disciplines affecting our lives. I'd LUUURRRVE to hear from you, so don't be shy...

  1. Wow, all over it! And it would make a potential best seller too.

  2. Sad about the execution.

But, I never have issues finding stories. I have issues keeping them back when I'm writing other stories.

  3. You're right. Fact is stranger than fiction and this has the markings of all kinds of plot twists. Sad what we do to each other.

  4. I know. And I swear for all his flashiness, we all loved Lolly. He was like Las Vegas personified if you know what I mean. And as for the people being knocked off after his death, its just tragic and totally unbelievable, its like "what movies do these people watch?"

  5. This is Myne Whitman's comment which somehow only appears in my email notifications and yet got lost somewhere in blogger:
Myne Whitman:Wow, all over it! And it would make a potential best seller too.

  6. Yes just change it enough you don't feel trapped by the truth. Unlike In Cold Blood by Capote, most books aren't helped by too much truth. You need to be Law and Order SUV--take a riff off the headlines. It's close but not the same.

I love hearing from you....
