Sneaky Sunday: Winter's Island by Lillian MacKenzie Rhine @LillyMacRhine

This book was heavily edited January 2014.

Cay Winters is an impressionable free spirit from Los Angeles, California. Losing her mother at a very youthful age has given her a drive to live life a certain way. Her aunt Lulu and cousin Malcolm welcome her into their hearts, taking care of all of the things needed by a motherless child. Being an artist has taken her to a lot of interesting places; but when the chance to live in Saint Thomas, Virgin Islands appears, she is eager to take it.
Once there, she is overwhelmed by the beauty and the mystique of the Virgin Islands. The food, the beaches, the attractions are amazing, but William Gatling is the best part. He takes on the task of teaching Cay how to love the right way. The only problem is the secret that he holds from her. A revelation that could rip her from his heart; or, worse yet, end her life.
The two lovers spend so much effort trying to fight their inner demons that they cannot see the true devils that are sitting in front of their faces. Once Cay fights her battles within, she can finally win the war outside. Once William accepts the truth, he can see the light.

~ William Gatling ~

William flanked himself on the roof of his small home to think about his current situation. It was his routine to do this every morning. He had been meditating since he was a child. It was not very peaceful then since his mother would scream at him to get off the top of the house, but even then he had to wake up every morning and greet the dawning light.
William always found pleasure in the contradictory habit. Creatures like him were supposed to fear the sun. It was deadly. A poison. He loved it. It was his sick hope that one day it would give him the freedom to fly eternally.
Lately, after laying in the confines of a humid bedroom with numerous willing victims and supporters to his habits, he yearned to feel the expanse of the pre-dawn air sweep the beads of sweat from his chest.

He relaxed quietly and slowed his breathing. The golden ball began to invade its light through the trees. Tropical flight patterns started as birds retreated for the day. The smell of fresh dew drenched leaves called to him every morning. William loved being a lethal creature of beauty. It was his immense joy to absorb every nanometer of his living environment.
"Hey. Are you returning to bed?"
Just another nuisance that he drew in to play around with then discard.
The fiery star continued to rise and create new forming patterns on his bare chest. Hmm, I wonder if I'm the only one who takes joy out of watching my body react to the elements. He yawned and reached his hands above his head to release every tense fiber in his being. Boredom was an unwelcome roommate and it was time for an eviction.
He lazily sat upright then something invisible hit him like a sledgehammer. What the hell was that? He became light-headed from the euphoria of knowing that something would change in his near future. What is it though? There was something in the air that was knocking him out. A scent. It was something sweet. Something new. William could feel his skin tingle and his eyes water. It was like staring at a flame for too long. Something inside of him burned in the best possible way.

Nuisances made his skin crawl and that was the last thing he needed. It was time to answer the bad taste that she put into his mouth.
"Gather your things and leave please. I'm done with your services." Even though his baritone utterance was direct, he knew suspicion and confusion would soon follow.
"Why would I leave? Are you kicking me out? Why? I thought we had a connection. William?" She was a whining little speck. Very inconsequential he thought.

"I'm sorry if this confuses you. My apologies, but I'm about done with my morning meditation. There's coffee on the stove but you must leave before I return inside." Before she could respond, he continued, "There's no need to argue. Last night was magical. Let's leave it at that." William then closed himself off to the world. He turned his attention back to nature calls. His sights were turned to the north. Something had his hairs standing on end and he was ready for her soul to dance with his. To be in love was rare for his kind. They tended to be a selfish bunch, but when a claim was formed, nothing could hinder it. He was in love and ready to make himself right for her.

He shook off his excitement and dropped down from his area of deep thought. He felt refreshed with the moist soil under his feet. The softness of the earth always made William feel alive and one with his environment. He had an obsession with wet things like the ocean, mud, and women, but soon his obsession would be focused on something of more importance. Her.

His overnight guest was wise to follow his instructions because he was not in the mood to repeat himself. William under most days was a mild-mannered man who found positivity in every situation, but of late, he was on edge. He did not know how to remedy his annoyance with his living habits but if something didn't change and soon, things would make a dire turn for the worse.
William retrieved a mug of coffee then headed to his room to start his day. He had to prepare like an animal answering a mating call. The shift in flow of his mundane life was approaching and it was exactly what he needed to survive. This gift would surpass all the nourishment he could ever fit in his body at one time, because his fulfillment would be due to other important substances – his one and only love.
